Allergies

Environmental Allergy & Food Sensitivity

Allergies and sensitivities are common and can affect people of all ages. They may be related to environmental triggers such as pollen, grass, dust, animal dander, or mold, or to certain foods and substances. Some people experience seasonal symptoms, while others notice them year-round. If you suspect you may have an allergy or sensitivity, assessment by our Naturopathic Physicians can help identify possible triggers. At Vancouver Island Naturopathic Clinic Inc. our Naturopathic Doctors can review your health history, discuss appropriate testing, and help you explore allergy management strategies suited to your needs and preferences.

Environmental Allergy Testing

We offer in-office skin prick testing for common environmental allergens, including:

  • Trees

  • Grasses

  • Weeds

  • Dust mites

  • Cat and dog dander

  • Ragweed

  • Mold

  • Additional items may be testes upon assessment

A skin prick test involves placing a small amount of the allergen on the skin (usually the inner forearm) and gently pricking the skin’s surface. The area is then observed for a response. Several allergens can be tested in one visit. Test preparation instructions are provided when you book your appointment.

If you have a history of severe or life-threatening allergic reactions, please consult your general practitioner for guidance on the most appropriate testing and treatment. We do not offer skin prick food allergy testing.

Environmental Allergy Management

Once your test results are available, our naturopathic doctors can review them with you and discuss potential options, which may include:

  • Lifestyle and environmental modifications

  • Pharmaceutical medications and natural therapeutics

  • Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT)

  • Referral back to your general practitioner for further evaluation or specialist referral, if indicated

Your management plan will be personalized based on your preferences, health history, results and the nature of your symptoms.

Food Intolerance & Sensitivity Testing

Food sensitivities and intolerance are not the same as true food allergies. Our naturopathic doctors offer food intolerance and sensitivity assessments through:

  • Comprehensive health history review

  • Physical examination

  • Diet and symptom review

  • Laboratory testing, when indicated

We can also assess and discuss strategies to support digestive health and investigate other possible concerns such as digestive conditions, malabsorption, SIBO, dyspepsia, or microbiome imbalance

If you suspect a life-threatening food allergy (e.g., peanut allergy), please seek immediate medical care and speak with your primary care practitioner about further testing and management.
